• Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi and his director-general incurred personal costs for failing to amend parts of the Immigration Act.
• The court issued the first order in 2017 which it suspended for two years to allow Parliament time to make the necessary corrections, to no avail.

The Constitutional Court slammed MPs, the Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, and the department`s director-general (DG) Livhuwani Makhode for failing to amend sections of the Immigration Act, six years after a court ordered it.
The apex court ruled on the matter between the DG, the minister and Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) on Monday. Read more…

Inflation in Nigeria last month soared to 26.7 per cent, the highest level in two decades
Nigeria’s currency has tumbled to record lows against the US dollar, putting further pressure on new president Bola Tinubu as he tries to reform Africa’s largest economy.
Tinubu took the reins in May, pledging to break with the policies of his predecessors and attract foreign investment to Nigeria. Allowing the naira to float more freely against the dollar was part of that agenda. Read more…

Motsoaledi calls for audit of foreign-owned spaza shops

Municipalities across the country are being urged to carry out audits on spaza shops owned by foreign nationals.
Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has made the call.
There are renewed concerns over the safety of goods sold at such outlets after the recent deaths of several children in Gauteng and the Free State.
The children fell sick after allegedly consuming products bought from their local spaza shops.
Last month, a shop owner was arrested in eThekwini for selling expired goods.
In Clare Estate, two spaza shops were closed down, and others were fined for improper use of premises. Read more…
